How To Deal With Dog Flatulence
You love your pooch. He is sweet and cuddly, always greets you at the door and cheers you up when you are blue with his wagging tail and sloppy kisses. But when he gets a case of gas it can be rather stinky, not to mention embarrassing if you happen to have guests over. Here are some tips for dealing with dog flatulence.
All dogs get a case of gas now and then, just like people do. You can identify the smell right away. And while it might be easy to cover up the smell with a hot of air freshener, it may not be so easy to deal with a house full of company or in a car ride. It may even be bothersome to your furry friend.
So what causes these gaseous explosions? Basically it is caused by a buildup of gas in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be brought on by eating too quickly and ingesting too much air at meal times. It can also be due to foods that cause gas in people like beans and sprouts. Cheap dog food and tables scraps may contribute to the problem as well.
The best way to combat the issue is to take better control over your pet's diet. When purchasing dog food get a good brand. Skip the generic food and cheap choices. Get something that is nutritionally balanced and is low in fillers. Pick out something that is designed for your size, age and breed of dog. This is true of canned food as well as dry kibble. If your dog tends to eat very quickly, divide the food into smaller portions and spread it out over the course of the day.
Cut back on treats. Treats are a good way to reward and bond with Fido, but should be kept to a minimum. A midday snack and/or a bedtime snack are sufficient. A good treat after a meal is a dollop of yogurt which helps with digestion and reduces dog flatulence. People food is not a good choice for treats, especially if is something that you know causes gas in people such as certain vegetables and legumes.
Remember that exercise is very important for many reasons and reducing flatulence is one of them. Walk your dog regularly and not just long enough for him to do his business. Take him out for walks regularly and make the walks long enough to have a positive effect. Among other benefits, walking will help regulate digestion and reduce the outbursts of wind breaking.
We all get a case of gas from time to time. And the same is true for your pooch. You can never eliminate the issue altogether but these simple changes can reduce the occurrences and make them easier to deal with when they do happen.
If the problem persists or seems severe or extreme, always consult your vet. If you have reason to believe that he or she needs medical attention, a call to the doggie doctor is always the best course of action.
